George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was an Irish playwright, critic, and thinker, recognized as one of the greatest literary figures of the 20th century. He began his career under difficult financial circumstances but worked diligently to become one of the foremost playwrights. His writings were influenced by socialism, and he was a staunch advocate for social causes, highlighting poverty, social injustice, and class hypocrisy.
Shaw's plays were characterized by satirical realism, prompting audiences to think while also laughing. Among his most famous works is "Pygmalion," which later transformed into the musical and film "My Fair Lady." Shaw used his plays as a medium to harshly criticize British society, targeting the social and political issues that troubled him.
In 1925, Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in recognition of his literary achievements, but he refused to accept it, stating that "the Nobel Prize is like a lifebuoy thrown to a man who has already reached the shore." This rejection reflected his independent nature and sarcastic spirit, which remained unaffected by official accolades or titles. Despite the criticisms he faced during his lifetime, Shaw became a symbol of critical and social thought, and his works continue to influence literature and theater today.
