يتكون فيروس كورونا من غشاء بروتيني يبلغ قطره 50 - 200 نانومتر، و يشكل الغلاف الخارجي الذي يحتوي بداخله المادة الوراثية و حجمها يتراوح بين 27-32 ألف قاعدة نيتروجينية. و تمتاز المادة الوراثية لهذا الفيروس بأنها عبارة عن خيط مفرد حمض ريبي نووي RNA. تسهم في تكوين هيكل جسم الفيروس أربعة أنواع من البروتينات البنيوية، منها البروتين S الذي يعرف ب"بروتين الحسكة"، و هو الذي يشكل النتوءات الشوكية الموجودة على سطح الفيروس و تمنحه الشكل التاجي المميز له
