Nail Dryers

UV lamps emit broad-spectrum ultraviolet light that cures gel polish in 2–3 minutes per layer — they are cheaper to purchase but the bulbs need replacing every few months. LED lamps emit concentrated LED wavelengths that cure gel polish in 30–90 seconds per layer — faster, more energy-efficient, and the LEDs last the lifetime of the lamp without needing replacement. LED lamps are the modern standard and the better long-term investment.

UV/LED nail lamps only cure gel nail polish — they do not speed up regular nail polish drying as regular polish air-dries through solvent evaporation, not UV/light curing. For regular nail polish, a small electric nail fan dryer, quick-dry nail spray (drops applied to wet polish), or a fast-dry top coat are the effective drying options. Cold water submersion also helps set regular polish slightly.

LED nail lamps cure gel polish in 30–60 seconds per layer (some base and top coats need 60–90 seconds). UV lamps take 2–3 minutes per layer. A complete gel manicure involves curing: base coat, 2 colour coats, and top coat — total cure time under an LED lamp is approximately 3–5 minutes. UV lamp total cure time is 8–12 minutes. LED lamps are significantly faster for the complete gel manicure process.

UV nail lamps emit low levels of UV radiation — comparable to brief sun exposure. To be cautious during frequent use, apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen to your hands before gel manicure sessions. LED nail lamps emit very minimal UV radiation and are generally considered lower-risk. Occasional gel manicures present minimal skin risk, but frequent (weekly) users of UV lamps may wish to use the sunscreen precaution.
