Product details

When I remember that morning in January 1979, the same feeling of wrenching sadness comes back to me in all its intensity. Tehran has been under attack for months, but now a tense silence hangs over the city, as if the capital of our country suddenly caught its breath. Today is the sixteenth of the month, and we are about to leave our country….” Her story begins as the beginnings of fairy tales. At the age of twenty-one, she married “Farah Diba Shah of Iran” “Mohammed Reza Shah Pahlavi.” Within days, her quiet life was turned upside down: her coronation as Empress of Iran was covered by the world's press, she became an overnight celebrity, and her first years of marriage saw a love marriage. the upbringing of four children, and a dedication to social and cultural causes, despite looming signs of serious national divisions. Twenty years later, the dream turned into a nightmare, demonstrations and riots shook the country, and Farah and the Shah decided to leave to avoid bloodshed. He never saw the exiled shah suffering from a serious illness in his homeland after that. Together, they sought refuge in Morocco, the Bahamas, Mexico, and Panama. They disappeared from view in a New York hospital where the Shah received treatment, until Egyptian President Anwar Sadat finally gave them sanctuary, and he himself was assassinated by fundamentalists just eighteen months later. The story of the last years of the "Shah", one of the most influential and disturbing episodes in the late twentieth century, when America's tense relationship with the Middle East began to reveal its flimsy foundations. Painful for a man and his country. Remaining Love presents its intimate vision of an era of upheaval, but most of all, it remains a powerful human document of a character whose life was caught between the epic and the tragedy of the national battle.
