Majnoun Layla is one of the most famous love stories immortalized in Arabic literature, inspiring many writers both in the East and the West. The protagonists of this tale are Qais ibn al-Mulawwah and his cousin Layla al-Amiriya, born in Najd during the 7th Hijri century. The two lovers grew up together, developing a deep attachment that blossomed into mutual love. However, their story did not reach a happy ending as Layla's family prevented their union, leaving Qais so infatuated that he became mad with love. Upon hearing of her marriage to another, he wandered aimlessly, reciting poetry and singing of his unrequited love. This tragic romance unfolds through the five acts of Maroun Aboud's play, beginning with the separation of the lovers and culminating in Layla's death, a result of her heartache, followed by Qais's suicide at her grave with a dagger.
This classic love story not only explores themes of unfulfilled love and madness but also delves into emotional turmoil and tragedy, making it a profound read for those interested in the intricacies of love and loss.
