1. Chip Function

Epson printers use a maintenance box to collect excess ink generated during printhead cleaning. This chip contains a digital counter; once the box is full, the chip sends a signal to the printer indicating that the box needs replacing, and the printer will shut down completely until the box is replaced.

As shown on the packaging in your image, this chip (T04D1) supports a wide range of EcoTank and L-Series models, including:

3. Why do you need this separate chip?

Instead of buying a completely new "maintenance box" each time (which is expensive), many people resort to:

Emptying the old box: Opening the box and cleaning the internal sponge of ink or replacing it with a new cotton/sponge.

Changing the chip: Installing this new chip in place of the old one, making the printer think you've installed a brand new maintenance box with 100% functionality.

4. Important notes during installation:

Care with the pins: Avoid touching the gold-plated copper contacts directly with your hands (natural oils on the skin can affect the conductivity).

Proper installation: Make sure the chip is positioned in the exact same orientation as the old chip to ensure the printer's internal "pins" make contact with the chip.
